SEO in a Nutshell

SEO - Short for search engine optimization, it is the process of increasing the amount of visitors to a Web site by ranking high in the search results of a search engine. It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site. SEO helps to ensure that a site will be found by the search engine and will be assigned well position on search. Here are some tips on SEO to boost up traffic.

01. Keep Meta Tag Keyword Lists Under 1000 Characters : Keep your meta tag keyword list to under 1000 characters. Anything more and you may have your relevancy rank penalized by search engines. Additionally, do not repeat any one keyword in the keyword meta tag more than three times.

02. Use Plural Keywords : Try to use your keywords in the plural form. Such as, CLOCKS instead of CLOCK. A user search on the keyword CLOCK will find both CLOCK and CLOCKS but a user search for CLOCKS will usually not turn up pages using the keyword CLOCK in singular form.

03. Use Keywords In Page Title : Many search engines will look to see what words you have used in your page title tag. It is VERY important that you include the keywords you want to be found under in this title tag.

04. Short Meta Tag Description : Most search engines will truncate your description if it is too long deleting possible key points you are trying to convey. Keep your meta description to 25 words or less to avoid having posted an incomplete message to readers.

05. Different Description & Keywords For Different Pages : Don't use same keywords and description for all of your pages. Your contact us page's keywords and description shouldn't be same as your homepage.

06. The First 250 Words : Search Engine robots scrutinize the first 250 word of text in your page for relevancy and keyword count. You must use your keywords in the appropriate proportions in this part of your page. Some say a 10% - 40% keyword count in this section of text is ideal. Always start this text with the page title you used in the title tag. Avoid keyword repetition (i.e. repeating keywords one after the other).

07. Don't Use Meta Refresh Command : This command is used to automatically transfer a page to another without requiring reader input.

08. Use Links Containing Keywords : One way to increase a keyword count is to use a series of working or non-working links containing a description and link that incorporate your keywords. This also has the advantage of providing links to other web sites from your page which the Search Engines also look for.

09. Avoid Robotic - Automated Submission : When submitting your web page to one of the top 8 search engines, try to post your page manually rather than using any automated software or sites that post for you to get into the prime search engines. Many people believe that over 70% of your hits will come from Google and Yahoo! It's probably worth spending a considerable amount of time trying to get a good ranking from theses search engines. (Actually Yahoo is more like a directory than a search engine and requires that you read their help pages about their listing method)

10. Get Your Pages Linked From Other Sites : Some Search Engines will increase your relevancy if your site is linked to from other sites. Start to surf sites, try to search good sites having better page rank and those sites should be from your niche or closely related. Link back from a garments related site to webmaster resource site can't be proved as useful. Never put any outbound link to a bad neighborhood site. If any site tries to boost up their search engine ranking by any illegal methods, making engines fool, using cloaking, having duplicated content instead of no original content, having hidden text and links and doorway pages, Search Engines may penalize such sites and stop to index them. Also sites which are involved in promoting hates, communalism or involved in link exchange system, spam, spread viruses, contains pornography get black listed. Before you link back to any site written in language not known to you, start converting the content of that site into your language. You can use Bablefish Translation System which you can get visiting the homepage of Atlavista and if the content is similar from your niche then next check whether the site is being indexed of Search Engines or not. You can check whether it is being indexed by Google or not - just simply typing site:www.yoursite.com into the query box of search engines. If no result comes out, then be sure the site is black listed. If you have outbound links to many different sites, such checks might take a lot of time. Visit http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/ - it provides a tool that reports links to and from suspicious sites and sites that are missing in Google's index.

11. Avoid Java & Frames & Flash : Search Engine robots face difficulties with pages containing Java and frames (not the Java Script which is ignored by search engines) and flash elements.

12. Don't Use Text That Is The Same Color As The Background : Search Engines look for text that is the same color as the background which is being used to increase the keyword count without the reader seeing the text. This has become a definite no and you may be penalized for such tactics.

13. Use Image Alt Tag : Every image allows you to include a text description of that image in the alt tag. Use these tags to incorporate keywords or phrases to increase your keyword count. Search engines do consider alt tags in their relevancy rankings.

14. No Broken Link & No Broken Image & No Under Construction Page : Never have broken images or links. Search Engines hate these things. If your site has broken links, don't even start submission. Google won't care about you if you don't care about your visitors.

15. Have Unique Content : Always have unique contents. You can put content from Open Directory but that doesn't uplift your rank. Again it may help you if the site from where you are lending articles or texts - is not counted by any search engines. But the probability of such happenings is 00.000000001%. Note that Search Engines penalize sites without own content.

16. Update Your Site : You need to periodically update the content of your website. Search Engines love growing sites. Spiders give better rankings to sites that update content often.

17. Use Sitemap : Make your XML sitemap and submit it to Google by visiting the link https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login. Also create a robots.txt file because this will tell the search engines what not to spider on your site.

18. Use of Dynamic Pages : Some CMS like Wordpress, they offer SEO friendly URL. So there should not be any problem with this.

19. DMOZ Plays : Manually register your site with DMOZ, also known as the Open Directory Project. The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors and feeds other leading web directories.

20. Site Maturity : Ranking mostly depends upon the maturity of the site. Older sites will have better rankings and will have more indexed pages. If it is financially possible then register your domain for 4-5 years. It will be obvious that you have not entered the world with the aim of a vagabond. You have come to do something. Search Engines will take you in consideration.

21. Organic SEO : Article writing and blogging, these two Organic SEO yields the better result than an average skilled SEO analyst can do. Why not submitting some unique articles and to submit them to article directories with pagerank, even 7/8/9 out of 10? Put a link to your site there. Forum posting might be another good way. Post in forums and use your domain name as signature.

22. Keep Patience : Once you follow these suggestions, allow search engines time to re-index your site. In the Internet age, we're looking for instant results. However, it does take some time for all of your search engine optimization techniques to take hold.

I end this article saying "It is good SEOing your site - but over SEOing may kill you."

SEO Secrets : Get first page on google.

How do some businesses achieve commercial growth through using the internet? The secret is Organic Search Engine Optimization. There's a few pieces to the puzzle that include keyword analytics, On-Page work (things done on your web site), and Off-Page work (things that can be done other places on the web - not on your web site). The Analysis and review is critical as it provides input and guidance to all of the other activities. A good optimization consultant can deliver competitive analyses, keyword analysis and a web site assessment of your current web site. The competitive analysis will tell you who you are competing with on the web if you already don't posses this knowledge. Knowing their web strengths and weaknesses can be the key to positioning yourself against them. They keyword analysis is critical as it is an iterative effort that results in the key words you will use on your site and can also provide input into SEM activities if you decide to go that route.

The keyword analysis process typically consists of these steps; • Sample words are selected • The list is widened to include similar phrases • The list is narrowed according to opportunity • Keywords are selected and deployed

The assessment of your current web site can provide a view as to what areas can be improved purely from an SEO standpoint. Are there images that contain embedded text invisible to search engines? Are there images that are not fully tagged? Has a tableless design been used? There's many way to optimize a web site that don't include lacing keywords into the text (although that is a critical activity!). This assessment will position all of the on-page activities such as; • meta Tags Development • ALT Tags / Images • Anchor Text Optimization • Content Level Optimization: The off-page activities are all designed to both increase high quality traffic at your site and to increase search engine rankings. The amount and type of these activities is also something that can be decided by the end goal and should be aligned with your budget. These activities are made up of a sub set of the following;

Website Submissions: * Submission to free Search Engines * directory site submission to many Search Engine Friendly Directories. Advanced Techniques: * Articles Submission - Submit your articles to specific sites where our desired articles content will be published. * Blogs Submissions - Create blogs for public blog websites that will publish highly relevant information for website along with links to desired Landing pages of website. * Press Releases - Take a baseline prior to project commencement so you can track your progress on traffic, bounce rates, and search engine rankings. This is how you can tell that you are being effective and how you can see the value of your investment in Organic SEO activities.

3 steps to rank top quickly

It can usually take months before your site starts receiving decent amounts of traffic from search engines, even after well applied SEO. Everyone wants that #1 spot, but very few webmasters can brag with such achievements.

What I have for you here, is a 3 step blueprint that has proven very effective in my experience with SEO. It usually takes between a couple of weeks and a month to achieve top rankings with this method, and I'm talking about Google here, not some second rate search engine.

Step 1 - Keyword research

This is the crucial step of the process. Do this wrong and expect to fail in your attempt for high rankings. You need to find quality keywords that receive decent amounts of traffic but have fairly little competition - and by competition I mean something around 10.000 at most - results for the keyword in quotes on Google, but obviously the less the better.

What you are looking for is ONE great keyword in the niche of your choice and TWO secondary keywords.

Step 2 - Site Creation

The first thing you need to do here is buy a domain name that is actually the exact main keyword you found. So if your main keyword is "Cheap trips to the moon", your domain should be "cheaptripstothemoon.com" or "cheap-trips-to-the-moon.com".

After purchasing the domain, I recommend using WordPress for the site's content management. Google simply loves well optimized WordPress blogs. Make sure you change the Permalinks so that the exact name of the post appears in the post's link. If you don't know what I'm talking about, do a Google search for Wordpress Permalinks.

For the plugins section, I absolutely recommend the "All in one SEO pack" which can help your cause a lot so make sure you get it and activate it. Also, make sure you update the ping list, it will help indexing every new post you make quickly.

After everything is ready, start making posts on your topic. Make sure that the main keyword and secondary keywords are used in the posts. It is recommended you make one every day. It doesn't always have to be an original post although that would be recommended. What I found works almost as good, is posting fresh articles from article directories like EzineArticles.com. Google still sees it as fresh quality content added on a regular basis, the only downside is the fact that you must include the resource box which can drive visitors away from your site.

Step 3 - Site Promotion

The third step is as important as the others. Immediately after creating the site and adding a few posts, you must send news stories to social bookmarking sites like Digg, Technorati, Stumbleupon and Newsvine. There are many more, but these are the ones I use. The most important is probably Digg, so if you just want to send one story, make sure you send it to Digg.

The story must have for the title your main keyword - very important - and a description regarding your site that can include the secondary keywords as well. This step gets your site indexed in 24 hours.

Next, you should continue promotion by finding quality do follow blogs and making useful comments, using your main keyword as "Name" for the comment and your site's link in the site box.

You should do this on a daily basis. Adding content, social bookmarking the posts, and generating inbound links by making quality comments.

If you follow these steps exactly as they are outlined, there is a very good chance you will rank in the top 3 spots for the main keyword in about a month. Then you can concentrate on getting good spots for the secondary keywords also, your job will be easier at that point.

Keep up with the competition using SEO Tools

For many web site owners and managers, search engine optimization is a very important aspect of a successful online business. The reason why SEO tools were created was mainly to make it easier for online businesses to optimize their web sites. SEO tools are highly effective both for new users and web site owners wanting to improve on their search engine optimization. There are many types of SEO tools. One type is the backlink checkers which enables you to monitor the incoming links to your web site. Incoming links are actually very powerful in optimizing your web site to get a high rank in search engines.

It is important that you have control over these links and know who has links to you. By using a backlink checker, you can save a lot of time in doing these tasks. One of the most essential SEO tools is the keyword density checker. It is a common knowledge that keywords are the building blocks of the internet. By using the right keywords, you can dominate the search engines and attract more traffic to your site. The keyword density checker can be very helpful in showing the density value of your web pages. Knowing the right keywords to target is important for your web site to provide what people are searching for.

Pay per click advertising is also one income generating aspect on the internet and many online marketers or affiliates are earning money from this. If you use the appropriate keywords on your ppc advertisement, you will be able to generate more sales. Almost all online marketers and web site owners rely on a keyword research software. Through this kind of software, you will be able to get thousands of profitable keywords and why some of your keywords are not generating enough traffic. SEO tools like these are highly recommended for online marketers or affiliates to give a boost to their pay per click advertisements.

This revolutionary keyword software can do magnitude of jobs for you. Doing all these task by yourself is quite impossible, that is why new SEO tools are coming out in the market to unburden online marketers of this tasking job.

There are still many SEO tools that you can choose from. It depends on you to determine which tools are essential to your business. One thing is for sure, these SEO tools are here to assist you in discovering more potential markets that are waiting to be tapped.

What Exactly is Search Engine Optimization

Now I think that the question asking about the definition of SEO is a great path to go down, don't you? Well, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process of choosing the most relevant and targeted keyword phrases that are related to your website and to make sure that this process will rank your site higher in the search engines so that when an internet surfer is browsing for specific queries, it displays your site near or at the top of the search engines.

It basically involves fine tuning or sometimes tweaking of the content on your site along with the HTML and Meta tags and also involves a solid relevant link building process. The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL. Search engines keep their methods and ranking algorithms under lock and key. The reason that they keep the exact specifics of it very private is because for one thing, it's a private business matter that they don't need other competitors peeking in too closely at what may deem them to be who they are.

Another reason to keep these formulas hush, hush is so they get credit for finding the most valuable search results and to deter would be spam pages from messing with those pure results. It really goes without saying that you as an internet surfer really doesn't want to be dealing with unwanted spam or advertising that is not relevant whatsoever to what your looking for.

Search engines can and have been known to use hundreds of different factors while ranking the listings for everyone to see. The decided factors themselves and the weight that they each have and carry may change continually. Don't take this as too much of a big surprise, as most of us know in this tech world, everything is always changing pretty fast. Everyday you learn or hear about something new evolving.

These algorithms can differ so widely from one moment in time to another. Because of this, sometimes a webpage that ranks #1 in a particular search engine could rank #200 in another search engine. New sites need not be submitted to search engines to be listed. A simple back link from a well established and high ranking quality site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to index its contents.

This spider crawling robot process can take from a few days to even weeks from the referring of a link from such an established site for all the main search engine spiders to commence visiting and indexing the new site. You can never really predict what is going to happen and why, but you can come pretty darn close to others who have spent a lot of time researching the history and the news that these companies give out.

If you are unable to research and choose keywords and work on your own search engine ranking, you may want to hire someone to work with you on these issues. I can tell you right here and now that there is really no shortage in the internet business world for SEO guys or Internet Marketing gurus. The main key in deciding who you will give your money to in return for a great marketing service might end up being someone you just click with really well.

Search engine marketing and website promotion companies, will look at the plan for your site and then make recommendations to increase your search engine ranking and website traffic. If you would like, they will also provide ongoing consultation and reporting to monitor your website and make recommendations for editing and improvements to keep your site traffic flow and your search engine ranking high.

Normally your search engine optimization experts work with your web designer to build an integrated plan right away so that all aspects of design are considered at the same time. I know that if your new to this SEO world, a lot of what you read here might be going over your head. That is a completely normal reaction to entering a new world that you might not know anything about right away. Just remember that with great diligence and effort on your end, you will be learning about more than you ever thought you would.

Why you Should Not Submit your site to search engines

Before answering this question we have to know what is the difference between a search engine and directory. Here is a brief explanation.

Main difference between search engine and directory lay is the way websites get entered into their index. People submit their sites to the directories, which are reviewed by human editors. Think of the directories as collections of Internet sites organized by subject. Search engines work by sending out a spider to fetch as many documents as possible. Following, another program called an indexer, reads these documents and creates an index based on the words contained in each document.

Having said that, let’s see why you should not submit your site to the Search Engines.

More than 90% of the search engines traffic comes from three major search engines Google, Yahoo! and MSN.

You can see many ads on the Internet which look like this: "submit your site on X00.000 search engines…"

Submitting your site on hundreds of thousands of search engines wouldn’t help and is simply not worthwhile. Save your money as you would do when you see ad’s like: "loose weight while you sleep".

These three search engines provide results for many other search engines, and if you are listed on these three search engines, your site will be listed on many other search engines as well.

Altavista for example show results from the Yahoo! index. Rankings are not the same, because the algorithm is different but the index is the same. If your site is new and is listed on Yahoo but not on Altavista, be patient and do nothing. Altavista will show your site when they update their index from yahoo. AOL (America On Line) and Netscape use Google index. They additionally receive listings from DMOZ. There are many examples.

The so called "Meta" search engines like DogPile or Metacrawler are showing results from Google and Yahoo amongst. These search engines actually search the top search engines and show combined results.

If your site is not new, there is a chance that search engines spiders already find your site and index it. So before doing anything check if your site is already listed, even if you did not submit your site to any search engine.

But what you should you do if your site is just uploaded?

As we already explain search engines are equipped with spiders which will find on your site. All you need is to submit your site in Directories, and search engines spiders will find your link and your site will be indexed. But be sure to provide enough "food" for the spiders. That is, submit your site in enough directories, and you will make that process shorter.

While submission to the search engines is wasting of your time, submission to the directories is not. You will benefit from submitting your site to Directories, not only because search engines will find your link there and index your site, but you will also increase your link popularity. Search engines consider each link which is pointing to your site as kind of vote and give it a "credit" for each "vote".

That’s why you should submit your site to as many directories you can. However, don’t expect bulk traffic from the directories. Even the biggest directories like Yahoo! or DMOZ are not able to deliver load of traffics. On the other side, traffic delivered though the directories is usually quality traffic, because these people are browsing to the find products or services that you offer.

Submitting your site more than once to search engines might slow down indexing time. If you still want to submit your site to search engines, do that just once, and do that manually. Companies which advertise that they will submit your site on X00.000 will not do that manually, that is for sure. They use automated submission software, even all major search engines mention in their submission guidelines that you should submit your site manually. And major search engines are what you should care for only. You remember the fact where the over 90% of traffic comes from?

Remember that only submitting your site to the search engines does nothing to increase your ranking in most cases. If web site optimization on your web site is not properly implemented or is not implemented at all chances are small that your site will be on first few pages with results. And having in mind that only about 7% of the people look further then third page, top is the only place you want to be.

How to calculate if the search engine optimization is worth to invest in? Consider this: What is the annual worth of one customer to you?" Is it 25 €, 250 €, or perhaps 2500 €? How many customers you need to get the invested money back?

Optimization of your website might be one of your best investments ever, if is planed and implemented right.
